Eocene Green River Elderberry(?)
Family Adoxaceae(?).
Green River Formation
Middle Eocene
Lincoln County, Wyoming
This specimen is interpreted to be a cluster of berries from the family Adoxaceae (elderberry?). The example seen here is a small group of fruits still attached to the stems.
This family has about 20 living species today in temperate to subtropical regions in much of the world. No fossil leaves associated with this family have been identified in the Green River Formation yet. The fact that specimens such as this do not have distinctively preserved seeds within the berries make positive identification inconclusive.
